Who Really Belongs on National Geographic?

The other day an affluent woman came into the office and said something that really annoyed me. She began telling my co-worker and I about her recent trip to Peru with her husband, I rolled my eyes.....good for her. She went on and on about the Peruvian children and how they were dressed so, so what's the word, authentic? She continued describing their traditional dresses in colorful green and their hats, their hats were adorable. Then she said, "They looked like they belong on the cover of National Geographic." Stop. Wait a second. Did she just say that? Yes. She did. Here this lady is getting crap injected in her lips to make them nice and fat and Botox injected in her forehead so she can't make facial expressions and they belong on the cover of National Geographic? I think she should adorn the front page.
However, her comment made me think about how some Americans view other cultures. To some, other cultures are strange, ancient and barbaric but in reality if we look at some of the things we do, the things we eat, the clothes we wear (parachute pants), what we do to ourselves to be more attractive (Botox, tanning, hair-coloring, work-out obsessively) they are pretty damn weird too.
Perhaps the next time we look at a National Geographic or come into contact with people different from ourselves, we can respect who they are and maybe learn something in the meantime.
